I have shared my love for the oracle decks of Lorraine Anderson on Substack recently. She has a ritual of interviewing her oracle decks to get to know them better and to see how to best use them for guidance. I love the idea and have started doing this myself. I think I shared a spread in my premium newsletter in August. This one might be a bit different. I am still tweaking my own layout to give me information I need. If this idea sounds appealing to you, you can use this spread or create your own.
The reason why it’s important to interview your deck is because not all decks can or should be used to answer all questions. If what your question involves is shadow work, using a deck that is all sweetness and positivity isn’t going to give you the answers you need in a language that is appropriate for your question or concern.
I am slowly going through and interviewing all of my current decks and writing them down in a dedicated journal that I can use to figure out which deck is the best deck to consult in the future (this information will also be helpful when deciding to donate or sell any decks in the future). I am going to share one of those interviews with you now using a brand new deck that was released about a month ago: The Halloween Forever Oracle Deck by Tess Whitehurst and Jasmine Becket Griffith.
Even if you get this deck, you should do your own interview spread because we all have different relationships with our tools and resources and what works this way for me, may work a different way for you. Interviews are also a good way to practice using the deck and applying the information to the question being asked.
1. What is your personality?
2. What have you come into my life to help me with?
3. What kinds of questions are you able to answer?
4. What are your strengths?
5. What are your limitations?
6. What can you teach me?
7. When should I call on you for guidance?
Bonus Question: What will our relationship be like?
I break each card down below. I didn’t take fancy pictures of the deck out of a need to get this posted soon, given the subject matter (although Tess does say the holiday is forever) and because the eclipse and X-flares the last couple days have wiped me out!
1. What is your personality? I drew card 32. Fire Ritual. Keywords: transformational/alchemy. Establishing lightness where there is heaviness and freedom where there may have seemed a trap.
2. What have you come into my life to help me with? I drew card 21. El Corazon. To help heal your heartbreak, open your heart to love and to help you take steps to support the physical wellness of your heart.
3. What kinds of questions are you able to answer? I drew card 23. Zombie Kitty & Queen. Questions about letting go of who you were and being proud of who you are. Questions around accepting what is and what was. Releasing old stories holding you back and keeping you stuck.
4. What are your strengths? I drew card 38. Pumpkin Thief. Helping you change your inner narrative from one of lack to one of plenty and to teach you to expect and endless stream of wealth in all its many forms.
5. What are your limitations? I drew card 22. Fierce Yokai. Protection/boundaries.
How I interpret this card is that this is not the deck to consult if you need to know how to protect yourself from people or situations or discerning when to draw a boundary with people or yourself. While this card talks about both how to set boundaries and how to protect yourself, we have to consider the question it is answering and apply the meaning to the question. This is where people get tripped up in card reading.
6. What can you teach me? I drew card 13 Candy Moonbeams. Teach you how to find your “Halloween Candy” or the one thing that can stoke your excitement and magnify it to turn your mood and your vibe around. How to free up your inspiration, motivation, and intuitive knowing about how to proceed.
Going back to question 1, this 6th card is in line with the answer to that question. This deck is about switching the narrative and alchemizing pain into something sweeter.
7. When should I call on you for guidance? I drew card 25. Listen to the Dead. When you need to be reminded of the etheric allies and ancestors and spirits that can help you manifest the success you desire.
8. Bonus Question: What will our relationship be like? I don’t always ask this question. I think the deck will call you to ask when it is appropriate. I felt it was appropriate in this case.
I drew the Candy Witch card. Keywords: Sweet, kind and loving. Confectionary waves of blessing and goodwill.
I did use this deck this morning to ask about a complicated relationship dynamic and I can say that I agree with the limitation of the deck surrounding protection and boundaries. The spread really had a let bygones be bygones and just focus on the sweetness all around you - which doesn’t give me a feeling of being safe. It feels more like using the “love and light” approach to challenges. However, this is a gorgeous deck and I often need a push out of a bad vibe or a different way of looking at my own stories. I would use this deck for more inward facing questions rather than trying to divine guidance with dealing with other people, but as I work with this deck more and learn to interpret the cards, I may change my mind.
I won’t post every interview I do with a deck, but I may start doing my own oracle deck reviews and share how I use the particular deck and what I like about them. If that sounds appealing or useful to you, let me know in the comments below.
