Before I get into protection magic, I have to let you in on my cosmology where it concerns “dark energy” and dark magic. I don’t believe in it. Any of it. I don’t believe that there are dark forces trying to take us over. I don’t believe that spirits or demons can enter our bodies or that we need to be afraid of the mystical, magical or ethereal at all. I am more afraid of what human egos are capable of doing to me than anything dark energy.
I am not saying you are wrong if your beliefs are different than mine. By all means, keep believing whatever you believe. I’m not trying to change your mind or get you to abandon yourself. I just want to show you where I am coming from so you can make an informed decision about my advice and teachings.
By all means, keep up your rituals and your protection prayers - they are fantastic tools for energy hygiene. I have certain things I do too, that shield me from energies I don’t like. I just don’t think of them as dark or dangerous. I think of them as annoying and unwanted. I think of different energies like political parties. They all have different agendas and no agenda is any more “good” or “bad” than the others. They are just different and some of them resonate with my beliefs and will benefit me in ways I like and others don’t. There is no evil. Bad people, misguided people who are fearful and act out from that fear, sure. But no evil.
So, throughout this series, I am going to speak from the belief that we are always safe, energetically at least. Any undesirable energy cannot affect or effect us unless we believe that it can. And those beliefs are tough, aren’t they? As hard as I try to convince myself otherwise, there are some people that when I am around them all my insecurities bleed out or I become drained, irritated and sometimes even feel completely hopeless. And we can certainly take steps to protect us from those energies we don’t like or want around us. I just don’t believe those energies are dangerous. I like a more empowering approach to these things - and energy protection is empowering. You are powerful. Your magic is powerful and we cannot argue the power and strength of the Divine to protect us - even if we haven’t asked for it.
Since I am on the subject and we are all right here, you won’t find 101 ways to protect yourself as an Empath or anything like that in this newsletter. I believe all of these narratives are very disempowering and geared to make people fearful and when we are fearful, we are controllable. Again, I think we need to take steps to protect ourselves from energies we don’t like, but I am tired of the empathic tropes that turn us into victims of psychic vampires and narcissists. . I am an empath and a very powerful one. I am not a victim to other people’s energies.
“So Mindy, if you don’t believe in dark energies, why then do you use protection magic?”
You may be asking yourself this question and I do have an answer: because there are lots of energies (and people, places, animals and situations) I do not like and do not want to be around. These energies can affect my moods and energy levels. There are certain people I am around that cause physical pain in my joints because I am highly empathic and I can pick up on and absorb energies around stuck and stagnant behaviors1. And, those energies show up in my physical body. Uncomfortable, yes. Dangerous, no.
Because I cannot control all of the situations in which I find myself, or the energies I interact with, I do have some techniques I use to protect myself from the energy drains I experience. One of them is a bubble of light. Kyle Gray has an excellent one that I use and rather than spell it out in this post you can find it here. I use this any time I know I am going to be somewhere with large crowds or around people who exhaust me. It is particularly helpful around people who complain a lot. I also add to the prayer where he says “…nothing but love is allowed to enter this bubble…” or however it goes, I add “and nothing but love remains inside” because I have met me. I know how I can be and some days what I really need protection from is myself.
Vix Maxwell says in her book Witch Please! “Protecting yourself is a powerful way to be clear with yourself and the universe about what you will and won’t allow into your energy, your thoughts, your emotions and your life.” I like this explanation. It is empowering. It says “hey, I get to decide how I want to feel and I won’t allow that to be dictated to me by the outside world”. Nothing more powerful than a good ol’ declaration.
So, in a nutshell, magical protection can help you feel safe in the world and help you hear guidance or make decisions without interference from outside energies.
Here are a few ways to protect your energy
I have already shared the bubble of light I use.
Another one I use is to call on Archangel Michael and Raphael and if I am really feeling it, I will include Archangel Metatron. I say “Thank you for protecting me from any energies I may encounter that are not helpful or are not in resonance with me.” I may even thank them for protecting others from my own energy.
You can carry a protective crystal in your pocket (or bra). You can infuse the crystal with your intention, but I tend not to do that. I find it unnecessary. My intention for picking it up and bringing it with me is enough for me.
If you don’t like big crowds and you know you are going to encounter that during your day, you can cloak your energy. In her Little Guide to Protection Magic, Tess Whitehurst suggests using a little spell to cast on a charm that you carry with you:
I radiate confidence. I am shielded in light. I deflect all that is not love. I am wrapped in a cloak of security. With the infallible help of divine light, I am safe.
I like this idea. She also envisions a mirrored ball around herself so that when she encounters people who don’t feel safe to her, they only see themselves mirrored back to them. You can reinforce this by wearing a mirrored necklace.
There are so many cool ideas out there. Something will resonate with you and your style. In this post I wanted to make the introduction but not share every possible way. You are always encouraged to do your own research. Don’t rely on me to show you the way - there are thousands of people out there with their own unique ideas and practices. My intent here is to welcome you into the world of magical lifestyles and give you enough information to find your own ways.
Our knee jerk response to this might be that those people are just toxic. But what I have learned over the last couple of years is that their energy is mixing with my own stuck and stagnant energy. So, in a nutshell, my own energy is contributing to these experiences. It is not just the other person. We will talk more about this in a future post on energy hygiene.
